For larger projects, survey programmes can be planned around multiple sites and geographical locations.
Cathodic Protection is a corrosion-control technique used to protect metallic structures from electrochemical corrosion.
It works by controlling the electrical potential of the structure so that corrosion reactions are significantly reduced. CP is commonly used to protect buried and immersed pipelines, tanks, well casings and other metallic infrastructure.
Even a well-coated pipeline can develop defects in its coating over time. Cathodic Protection provides additional protection at these exposed areas.
An effective CP system can:
• Reduce the risk of external corrosion
• Extend asset service life
• Reduce the likelihood of leaks and failures
• Identify changes in corrosion protection performance
• Support proactive maintenance
There are two principal types:
Sacrificial Anode Cathodic Protection
Uses a more reactive metal, such as magnesium, zinc or aluminium, which preferentially corrodes and provides protection to the structure.
Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP)
Uses an external DC power source, normally a transformer/rectifier, connected to an anode system to provide protective current to the structure.
